This memorial website was created by Madison's Mummy and Daddy as a rememberance to 'Our Little Lady'.
Maddie was born at Salford's Hope Hospital in the United Kingdom on Wednesday 15th December 2004 at 8:48pm weighing 3lb 6ozs, she was 2 months premature and had a heart condition known as Fallots Tetralogy (which we knew about during our pregnancy) She spent most of her short life in the Special Care Baby Unit where she came on leaps and bounds and grew stronger every day. She did so well it was easy to forget she had a heart condition. Madison was absolutely beautiful and had characteristics and looks from both Mummy and Daddy; she had Mummy's chin and bottom lip that would curl up when she cried. She had Daddy's kiss curl in her hair and her maternal Granddad Roy's long piano fingers.
Maddie would kick at the bottom of her cot, pushing herself up and down. If she was uncomforable, she would wriggle until she was on her favourite side. Maddie would root for her bottle when she was being changed, she knew that once her botty was changed and she was wearing clean clothes, it was dinnertime! After dinner, Maddie would cuddle up on Mummy or Daddy's chest and sigh with contentment, burying her head in our necks! Maddie loved having a bath and always had a big smile on her face as we splashed water on her legs! Maddie had an NG Tube to aid feeding; she was such a little Madam, always grabbing it and pulling it out of her nose! As Maddie grew she became more aware of her surroundings, responding to our voices and noises from her Penguin cuddly toy. She would get so excited at the sound of Mummy and Daddy's voices. We spent hour after hour with our daughter every day, doing her 'cares' and bonding with her. We cherished the time with Maddie and loved being her Mummy and Daddy. After 9 weeks Maddie was transferred to The Watson Mann Cardiology Unit at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (Pendlebury) to be assessed regarding a temporary operation known as a BT Shunt. Once it was decided the operation would go ahead Maddie was moved to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool who would perform the surgery. Surgery went very well and Maddie was all set to come home for the first time. How Maddie Died On the evening of the 25th February 2005 Maddie was transferred from the Intensive Care Unit to the High Dependancy Unit because she was recovering so well. She was suppose to be given a 50ml infusion of saline solution mixed with 1,500 units of Heparin, however Nurse Ceri Evans and Charge Nurse Gavin Proctor misread the prescription written by Doctor Ayatri Ghatak. Instead of giving Maddie 1,500 units of Heparin they administered 15,000 units. Ghatak had written '1500u' instead of the full word 'units' and the u had been mistaken for an extra 0. Evans and Proctor set the syringe to deliver 2ml per hour over 24 hours. The next morning blood clot tests should have been performed to make sure Maddie's blood was clotting in the correct time, however the nurse taking over the next morning, Kelly Black failed to take these tests at 7:30am and didn't do them until 3:30pm. It was her Charge Nurse Russell Ashworths job to authorise the blood clot tests which he too failed to do. If the tests had have been done at the correct time it's possible Maddie could have been saved. By early evening on the 26th Maddie started to deteriorate badly and after around 5 hours of battling to save her Madison was tragically taken from us on Saturday 26th February 2005 at 10:10pm aged just 10 weeks and 3 days. We were with Maddie almost all the way through her final fight as doctors fought to save her. Her funeral took place on Thursday 24th March 2005, her little pink coffin adorned with her nursery theme character 'Jenny Giraffe'.
We miss our little girl so very much and love her more than words can say. It breaks our heart that she is not here with us, that we will never have a future with her. She made our lives complete, which were very empty until our 2 other beautiful daughters came along. We live in hope that one day we will meet her again and be able to make up for all the lost time.
